Sunday mornings have become my favorite time of the week. Everybody is home. The diet has a day off. Mike and I chill on the couch, drink coffee, and crack up over my iffy fluency of the English language. Yes, I was born here, so don't be fooled if you hear him refer to me as his foreign girlfriend.
Since we're all together on Sundays, it got me thinking of easy, relaxing, (and no mess to clean up!), morning rituals we could do either as a family or as a couple. Although we're a household of adults (in age, at least), the following list can easily be adapted to include kiddos too!
1. P L A Y I N G T H O S E M I N D G A M E S T O G E T H E R
In my late teens and early-twenties, I played a lot of mind games, but those aren't the kind we're talkin' about here. I'm referring to the more mature word and number puzzles such as Extreme Sudoku, Flower Power, and Cryptograms that you find in PennyPress publications.
Buy one of their massive magazines for four bucks and it could last you forever! Or register with 'em at no cost and print out five free puzzles a day (don't forget the solutions too — no peeking!). Play a few over tea and feel smarter the rest of the day.
2. B E S T I N S H O W & T E L L
Just like show & tell in grade school, minus throwing up from nerves!
Save an entertaining story or anecdote that happened during the week to share on Sunday morning over sausage and eggs. If the previous six days were uneventful, dig out an old relic from your past and tell the story behind it. Feel free to embellish.
3. L E A R N A L A N G U A G E
Here's hoping it's not too late to excel at speaking a second language, considering I am not doing so well with my native English. My maternal great-grandmother was Basque — which has a language I would love for us to learn as a family because it is so unfamiliar, it would be like speaking in a secret code!
Choose a language whether it's Dothraki, Elvish, Spanish, or something not from your home planet, and study on Sunday and practice together throughout the week!
4. B R A I N S T O R M A B R E W I N '
We're a family of creative-beings, so on any given Sunday you'll find a lively discussion going on around the craft table — with ideas flying fast & furious! Our collaborative brainstorming sessions are made more enriched by our eccentric personalities and eclectic life experiences.
Brainstorming has been my most prolific idea-generating technique for thirty-plus years. If it's not broke, don't fix it! There are a gazillion ways to brainstorm; I personally prefer mind mapping.
Whatever your topic is, from blog post possibilities to what theme to decorate your backyard patio, to planning the neighborhood block party, brainstorming is a great starting point to get productive and proactive with your projects!
5. G E T Y O U R C R A Y O N
There's been a lot of buzz about adult coloring books lately, such as these cool ones from the Creative Haven series! You can even participate in National Coloring Book Day coming up on August 2nd — which conveniently falls on a Sunday this year. Grab a cup of coffee and your Crayons and start living a more colorful life!
Now your turn: share your typical Sunday morning in the comments section.
