I've been hinting at it for days, here and on Twitter — and now I can finally debut my new crochet project: The Spirit of St. Louis Squares Bedspread! Inspired by the magnificent M•G•M Technicolor musical, Meet Me in St. Louis!
Meet Me in St. Louis has been in my consciousness since childhood. I remember my Nana always watching it or singing something from it (I definitely got my love for movies and musicals from Nana!), but it was never one of my favorites. Until a few years ago, when I finally sat down to watch it from the beginning with Marissa (who, I believe, twisted my arm to do so).
How I went so many years without obsessing over this masterpiece is beyond me. There is the obvious magnificence of the cast, led by Judy Garland and Margaret O'Brien, and of course, the music. But O•M•G, then there are the textures and designs of the sets, props, architecture and costumes! To get an excellent visual of what I mean, check out these posts from Hooked On Houses and Sweet Sunday Mornings. Bookmark 'em, 'cause you'll probably want to visit again!
It was while watching Meet Me in St. Louis a few weeks ago that I heard bells ringing! At first I thought it was the trolley — but realized it was an idea! With all the extravagant fashions, the stunning stain-glass windows, the ornate furnishings, and the vibrant color combinations, Meet Me in St. Louis was a film made to be recreated into a crochet blanket. Well, not just a crochet blanket — Meet Me in St. Louis is a muse for all types of crafts: knitting, sewing, needlepoint, art journaling, jewelry making — quite honestly, there is something in each scene to spark your creativity! That's when I heard the ding, ding, ding of the trolley — no wait, of another idea!
I would start a tradition of Crafting with the Classics: choosing classic movies from Hollywood's Golden Age to base craft projects on! And O•M•G, maybe it will catch on and become a Craft-Along! You know me, I already made the graphic for it and snagged a Flickr and Ravelry group name (I'll link 'em once they're all set up right and pretty and not effed-up-looking). And soon I'll have a dedicated page here on the blog with all the details, including links to classic and Technicolor film sites, bloggers who are crafting-along, ideas for craft projects, et cetera, et cetera, et cetera (Oh! The King & I is a good one for this!).
You may ask yourself, how do I work this (or you may say to yourself, my god, what have I done?!), so now would be a good time to show you what it means to me to be inspired by a particular movie:

Above is an eight-by-eight inch granny square based on the colors of the Meet Me in St. Louis movie poster. These colors are also prominent throughout the film.

This dress worn by Esther Smith (Judy Garland) is the inspiration behind Crafting with the Classics. It is just about my favorite color combination, ever. Which means I'll probably end up crocheting a few dozen squares symbolizing this costume. Cake may end up on some of them too.
To start, I went with a simple square with bobbles...sometimes referred to as popcorn stitch...sometimes being totally different stitches. It's crazy, you're not. I was crazy, however, when I first attempted this pattern (by the way, I'm using 200 Crochet Blocks for Blankets, Throws, and Afghans: Crochet Squares to Mix and Match
by Jan Eaton). I finally learned how easy it is to change colors (and um, how you have to "pop out" the stitch) by watching the first few seconds of this video on YouTube. That video totally saved me from having a full-blown, flour-throwing, temper-tantrum.
I'm going to have fun with this blanket! I'm going to have so much with Crafting with the Classics! I even have the second project in mind, and collecting patterns and photos in anticipation! Hopefully you will want to come along and help spread the news about the craft-along. I would LOVE to see what movies you choose and what you come up with to create to represent 'em!
O•M•G! I popped a bobble!
