This Post Contains Spoilers from Episodes "And When I Die" (Season 4) & "The First Taste" (Season 1).

The season finale has knocked the breath out of everyone. Seems we're all feelin' like we've been kicked in the gut. And the moanin' and groanin' is being heard throughout the fractured fandom.
"Alan Ball didn't give us this!" "Alan Ball didn't give us that!"
"Alan Ball didn't give us quivering wet puppies beggin' to be petted!"
But some of us have suspected we've spent most of the season in Bill's House of Mirrors. We're disorientated and nauseated. We need to get our bearings, swallow down the bile and step out of the Billshit.
“I can't explain myself, I'm afraid, because I'm not myself, you see.”
~ Lewis Carroll (Alice's Adventures in Wonderland)
Fans are upset over how so many characters seemed, well, out-of-character this season.
How odd, in a season with magic spells, memory loss and skinwalking?
You can blame the "stupid writers" or we can examine the idea that these characters were experiencing an epic identity crisis.
The theme that stood out this season was IDENTITY: lost, false, true, multiple, stolen, mistaken, and borrowed. And while the main characters were often seen running around with their heads cut off, those "waste of storytelling-time extra characters" were doing what they do best: telling us what's really going on. No one did this more in season four than Jason Stackhouse.
Jason started to see the light at the end of the season three finale. It literally shined down on his face. And he has been our light in the times of darkness in Season Four. If you have not been paying attention to Jason - other than for his sexy hipbones - it's no wonder you are in the dark. And being the jock that he is, Jason really took one for the team in the season four finale.

This seemed awfully familiar, didn't it?
The trees, dirt road, bloody opened mouth, black figure in the background..
Sookie's beating happened in The Dark. She was knocked down to the dirt and kicked by a little man with a chain.
Jason's beating happened in The Light. He was knocked down to the dirt and kicked by a big guy with a chainsaw.
There's still plenty to explore as to exactly what Jason was trying to tell us with this borrowed Sookie identity. I'd like to think it was simply the writers flipping off the rabid fandom for believing they forgot a scene that was three years in the making (and a side-order of "Fuck you, very much!" for not thinking that them not mentioning it is part of a bigger picture!). But since Jason is Eric's main doppel, I am leaning towards the idea that this was to show Eric has also been kicked around (narrative-speaking) by someone bigger than him this season — that being KING BILL.
Whatever the message is for us, Jason felt being honest was the right thing to do for himself, for Jessica, for Sookie, for Eric.
Thank you, Jason. We know how bad the truth can hurt.
